APPLICATION AREAS FOR PORCELAIN LAMINATE
in General, Porcelain Laminate
DENTAL LAMINATE APPLICATION 1: PERFECTING THE TOOTH SHAPE
Teeth with minor abrasion, superficial disorders (such as pits) or minor developmental disorders are generally suitable candidates for dental laminate application.
In cases where the affected area is very small and localized, composite laminate application is a much better choice (easier, cheaper and requires less intervention to the natural structure of the tooth).
On the other hand, with dental laminate application, the entire front surface of the tooth become resistant to staining and structurally durable. Moreover, a more natural appearance can be created with dental laminate application.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
Disadvantages: By applying the composite filling material to certain areas, results similar to this method can be obtained. Moreover, it is cheaper and requires less intervention to the natural structure of the tooth.
Advantages: A big advantage of using dental laminates for this purpose is that the laminate is a longer-lasting solution due to its durability.
DENTAL LAMINATE APPLICATION 2: USING DENTAL LAMINATES INSTEAD OF COMPOSITE LAMINATE
Common problems with composite laminates are:
They tend to stain and change color over time.
Depending on the duration and shape of use, they may be subject to wear and tear.
On the contrary, porcelain laminates are more durable due to their ceramic structure and can last longer.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
Advantages: Porcelain laminates are more resistant to staining and structurally than composite laminates and can be used for a longer period of time.
Disadvantages: Despite all their advantages, porcelain laminates require more modifications to the natural structure of the tooth (usually more abrasion from the tooth surface) and are more expensive.
Note: The method used to adhere the porcelain laminate to the tooth surface can also be used to adhere the laminate to the composite filling. Therefore, if the composite coating you already have needs to be repaired, you can use porcelain laminate application for this.
On the other hand, your dentist may decide that the composite coating you already have should be completely removed so that the condition of your tooth can be thoroughly assessed. Your dentist may also decide that a new composite filling must first be made in order for the dental laminate to adhere more effectively.
DENTAL LAMINATE APPLICATION 3: USING PORCELAIN LAMINATES TO MAKE COLOR CHANGE IN THE DENTAL IMAGE
You can get a whiter smile thanks to Procelain laminates. It is also effective in problematic situations such as tooth whitening with porcelain laminate, drug-induced tooth stains, tooth color changes due to exposure to excessive amounts of fluoride as a child, and color darkening due to trauma or root canal treatment. This application can be performed in cases where the only requirement is color change and the patient’s teeth are structurally intact.
EXCEPTIONS
Porcelain laminate application is generally not a good choice for extremely dark teeth. In these cases, when dental laminate application is applied;
Serious abrasion may be required from the tooth surface, because the porcelain laminate may need to be very thick to provide the necessary color change.
Since very thick porcelain laminate is used, the final form of the tooth may be too voluminous or the lines of the tooth may appear misshapen.
It may be necessary to use extremely opaque (light-proof) porcelain. This prevents the final shape of the tooth from looking natural.
A better solution is to whiten the teeth before the procedure. Thus, the amount of change that needs to be made with porcelain laminates is reduced.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
Advantages: Since porcelain laminates completely cover the front surfaces of the teeth, they are effective in masking the stains and discoloration on the teeth.
Disadvantages: Laminates may need to be made of more opaque (opaque) porcelain to mask overly darkened teeth. This may cause the teeth to look unnatural.
DENTAL LAMINATE APPLICATION 4: USING PORCELAIN LAMINATES TO CORRECT THE APPEARANCE OF THE TEETH
If the misalignment in the teeth is not very serious, it is possible to have a smoother smile with porcelain laminate application.
This application is sometimes called “instant orthodontics”. Because the formal change in the appearance of the teeth can be achieved in a very short time such as 2 weeks (braces treatment can take months or even years).
Things to Consider
Advantages: Thanks to the extra thickness that porcelain laminates add to the teeth, it is possible to correct the alignment of the teeth. Thus, the patient can have a more normal and aesthetic smile. The fact that it can change the form in a very short time makes this method attractive for some people. Moreover, thanks to porcelain laminate application, it becomes possible to correct the alignment of the teeth and to mask the defects (color or deformities) on the tooth surfaces.
Disadvantages: For severely misaligned teeth, this method can be a very poor choice. In such cases, porcelain laminate application can lead to the following undesirable consequences:
Teeth that look good when viewed from the outside but adversely affect routine oral functions due to their thickness or volume.
More difficult teeth to clean due to new alignment
If a large amount of abrasion is made from the tooth surfaces to correct the alignment of the teeth, porcelain laminates may need to be adhered to the underlying dentin layer instead of enamel. This causes the dental laminates to not adhere strongly enough.
For severely misaligned teeth, braces application is the best solution. The alignment of the teeth can only be corrected with braces application or porcelain laminate application can be applied after a certain improvement is achieved with braces application.
DENTAL LAMINATE APPLICATION 5: USE OF PORCELAIN LAMINATES FOR CLOSING THE GAPS BETWEEN THE TEETH
Porcelain laminates can close the gaps between the teeth. As a matter of fact, porcelain laminates are the best solution for this purpose.
Under normal circumstances, one of the disadvantages of dental laminates is that they increase the tooth on which they are placed. But the spaces between the teeth that need to be narrowed, this situation turns into an advantage.
If the spaces between teeth are too small, composite filling is a better choice. The reason is that the application of composite filling is faster and cheaper and at the same time requires less intervention to the natural structure of the tooth (less abrasion from teeth is required).
THINGS TO CONSIDER
Advantages: When it comes to solid and healthy teeth, especially if there are stains on the surfaces of these teeth that need to be covered, porcelain laminate application should be the first choice.
Disadvantages: If the patient’s teeth are constantly exposed to high forces (due to the alignment of the teeth or a situation such as tooth grinding), crown coating is a much more suitable solution.
