PORCELAIN LAMINATE PROBLEMS
in General, Porcelain Laminate
1-CAN PORCELAIN LAMINATES BE RE-ADHERED?
If your laminate is separated from your tooth but is in one piece, it can be re-adhered by your dentist.
The success of the re-adhering process depends on:
The type of breakup. (Possible situations: a) Separation of the dental laminate from the tooth with the adhesive material. b) Separating the dental laminate from the tooth alone.)
How well your dentist prepares the front surface of the tooth and especially the inner surface of the dental laminate for re-adhesion.
Re-adhering may not be very successful. Because of its practicality and low cost, the re-bonding process is worth a try. On the other hand, very ideal conditions will not be provided and the connection established between dental laminate and your tooth will be below average. The solution with more predictable results, but more expensive and more time consuming, is the construction of a new dental laminate.
2-CAN BROKEN PORCELAIN LAMINATES BE REPAIRED?
If only a small part of your laminate is broken, it may be possible for your dentist to cover this part. However, this is not usually the preferred solution.
When such a method is applied, generally 2 main problems arise.
1-Your dental laminate is porcelain. But the only material your dentist can use to complete the missing part is plastic (dental composite). Even if the repair seems satisfactory at first, after a long time (months or years) the patches will appear, causing the patched part to look different.
2-The connection between the dental laminate and the patch may cause problems under high pressure.
3-CAN SMALL BREAKS BE REPAIRED?
If a small part of the porcelain laminate is broken, your dentist can abrate the formed pit to the relevant part. This is a very permanent solution. However, the tooth in the neighboring position may need to be abraded in a similar way in order to maintain the symmetry of your smile.
4- CAN DENTAL LAMINATE CRACKED REPAIR?
Although your dental laminate is as a whole, there may be cracks on it. In these cases, it is not possible to predict how solid the dental laminate is. Moreover, cracks can accumulate stains and spoil the appearance of your porcelain laminate. In such a situation, there is no repair that can be made. Your dentist cannot fill the crack in the dental laminate. Getting a new dental laminate is the only solution.
5-MAY RE-ADHERING PORCELAIN LAMINATE MAY NOT BE SUITABLE?
Sometimes it is not appropriate to re-adhere the separated porcelain laminate or a new one instead.
In the success of dental laminate application, it is very important to apply it in the right situations. If your dental laminate causes problems, it may mean that your situation is not suitable for dental laminate application.
If it is not appropriate to re-adhere dental laminate to your tooth, crown coating application should be preferred.
6-WHAT ARE THE REASONS CAUSE THE BREAKS AND SEPARATIONS OF DENTAL LAMINATES?
Notice what activity is breaking your dental laminate. After the renovation or repair is done, be careful not to repeat the same activity (eg biting nails or clenching teeth). Talk to your dentist about your condition. Your dentist can suggest some solutions. The type of problem you are experiencing can give your dentist clues about the underlying cause.
SEPARATION
In porcelain laminate application, teeth, adhesive materials and ceramics become interconnected. When the dental laminate is separated from the tooth, separation occurs either between the ceramic and the adhesive material or between the tooth and the adhesive material.
If there is no problem in placing the laminate, the problem is usually in the surfaces between the tooth and the adhesive material. The most likely reason for this situation is that the tooth surface to which the dental laminate is attached contains a high proportion of dentin (the tooth layer under the tooth enamel).
Explanation: The materials used for the bonding process can also create a connection with the dentine layer. However, the connection with dentin is much weaker than the connection with tooth enamel. If a significant part of the tooth surface consists of dentine, the connection between the tooth and the bonding material is weaker.
Solutions: Your dentist can try reattaching the dental laminate. Unfortunately, the problem that caused the separation of the dental laminate in the first place (not having enough tooth enamel to make the connection strong enough) continues, and the laminate can still be separated from the tooth. Crown plating is the last solution, especially if the problem has happened more than once.
BROKEN
Considering that porcelain laminates are thin and delicate, many people will be surprised that breakage occurs so rarely. The reason why porcelain laminates are resistant to breaking under normal conditions is that they are adhered to tooth enamel that is harder than them. Since tooth enamel is harder, most of the forces applied to the tooth are absorbed by the tooth enamel.
CRACKING
Cracking of a dental laminate means that forces are applied to the laminate, not the tooth, contrary to the situation described above. For example, when dental laminate is adhered to the dentin layer instead of tooth enamel, the forces focus on the dental laminate because it is harder than the laminate dentin layer. This causes cracking.
RUPTURE
In some cases, only a small part of the porcelain laminate will break. This indicates that the laminate is successfully attached to the tooth, but the applied forces exceed the limit that the ceramic can handle. The rupture effect can be a one-off event (like biting something too hard). But usually things that are causing the teeth rupture is a habit of squeezing or nail biting.
Most of the emergencies related to porcelain laminates are related to breaks or separations.
Fractures: Breaking, cracking, etc. of the dental laminate.
Separations: Separation of the dental laminate from the tooth it is attached to (usually in one piece).
If you feel strange about your tooth, the first thing you need to do is determine which of the above situations is in question.
1) IS YOUR DENTAL LAMINATE STILL IN ONE PIECE?
Carefully remove the piece from your mouth without causing further damage.
If you found only one piece and the piece looks big enough, your dental laminate may not be broken, just detached from your tooth. If this is the case, your dentist can reattach the laminate.
Check the general shape of your laminate to see if it is in one piece. One-piece laminates usually have rounded lines and are highly symmetrical. Your laminate should look exactly like a tooth when viewed from its glossy surface. You can also examine the tooth from which the laminate was separated. You can see that the broken parts of the laminate are still stuck to your tooth. (If this is the case, be careful. Such porcelain pieces can hurt your tongue and lips.) If it is in one piece, you can save your dental laminate by taking your dental laminate carefully to your dentist to avoid the cost of a replacement. Wrap your dental laminate in toilet paper and place in a hard container such as a medicine bottle.
If your laminate is broken, the only thing your dentist can do is to prepare a new one.
2) TELL YOUR DENTIST OF YOUR PROBLEM
Contact your dentist and explain what happened. Your dentist will give you an appointment time to determine exactly what happened.
3) TIME TO APPOINTMENT
YOUR TOOTH WILL POSSIBLY GOOD
In dental laminate application, a very small amount of abrasion is usually made from the tooth surface. If this is the case with you, it is unlikely that your tooth will have any major problems until your appointment. In many dental laminate applications, temporary coatings are not used, the teeth are left in this way during the 1-2 week period during which the laminates are prepared. Have peace of mind.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPERIENCE?
Your teeth may become more sensitive to hot and cold foods / drinks.
Your tooth can hurt / irritate your tongue and lips. (Especially if your laminate is broken and some parts are stuck to your teeth.
So be careful.
TEMPORARY SOLUTIONS FOR THESE PROBLEMS
White braces candles are available in some pharmacies. (These are often used to cover the sharp parts of the braces.)
Apply a small thin layer of braces wax on your teeth. Do not prevent it from getting between your teeth, this makes it easier for the braces wax to stay in place.
4) YOUR APPOINTMENT
If some of your dental laminate is still stuck on your tooth, they will be cleaned. This procedure is painless and takes a very short time.
