WHAT IS THE OLDEST KNOWN DENTAL IMPLANT?
Archeological findings show that people attempted to place root-like material in stead of the teeth they lost. Teeth were of big importance to ancient people who could not get soft hamburgers.
OLDEST DENTAL IMPLANT
In China, bamboo sticks planted to jaw bone and in Egypt precious metals used for the same purpose have been found. Some of the Egyptian mummies have other people’s teeth implanted to their jaws.
Oldest implant known is a 600 BC Mayan woman with seashells formed to resemble teeth at her lower jaw.
MODERN DENTAL IMPLANT
Swedish orthopedy surgeon and researcher Per-Ingvar Branemark is the inventor of modern implant. Branemark and his crew conducted a research on foot bones of a bunny using their titanium coated microscope and observed that titanium and bone fuse. In light of this finding, titanium implants were produced later.
