Digital Diagnosis and Planning

Digital Dentistry

Digital dentistry refers to the use of digital data in the diagnosis, impression, planning, design and follow-up processes. The technology does not replace the clinical examination; used correctly, it supports record-keeping, communication and planning.

Intraoral scanning

Intraoral scanners can create a three-dimensional digital record of the teeth and surrounding tissues. In some prosthetic, implant and orthodontic applications they can reduce the need for a conventional impression. Intraoral optical scanners are not X-rays and do not use ionising radiation.

Implants, prostheses and orthodontics

Digital implant planning can allow radiographic data and an intraoral scan to be brought together. At the prosthetic stage, a digital impression and laboratory communication can ease the workflow. In clear aligner treatment, digital scanning and virtual planning are among the core workflows.

Frequently asked questions

Is a digital impression more accurate?

It can offer high accuracy for many indications; however, the accuracy depends on the scanning technique, the size of the area and the clinical conditions. Additional verification methods may be needed with multiple implants.

Is it an advantage for people with a gag reflex?

Compared with conventional impression material, it can be more comfortable for some patients.

Does a digital scan involve radiation?

Intraoral optical scanners are not X-rays and do not use ionising radiation. CBCT, on the other hand, is a separate radiological imaging method.

Treatment duration

A digital workflow can shorten the number of appointments or the impression stage in some treatments; the precise effect depends on the type of treatment and the clinical conditions.

When it may not be suitable

The accuracy of a digital impression depends on the scanning technique, the size of the area and the clinical conditions. Additional verification methods may be needed with multiple implants.
