Inside the tooth there is vascular and nerve tissue called the pulp. When this tissue becomes irreversibly inflamed or infected, root canal treatment aims to clean the infected tissue and fill the root canal system.

What is root canal treatment?
When the pulp tissue becomes irreversibly inflamed or infected because of deep decay, trauma or a crack, the infected tissue is cleaned and the root canal system is filled.

Is root canal treatment painful?
Pain control during the procedure is the aim with local anaesthesia. There may be sensitivity for a few days after the procedure.
Does a root-treated tooth die?
The pulp tissue is removed; however, the tooth maintains its connection with the surrounding tissues and can function in the mouth.
Does every root-treated tooth need a crown?
The amount of tooth structure remaining and the risk of fracture are assessed. A protective restoration may be needed, particularly in posterior teeth; it is not the same in every case.
What happens if root canal treatment fails?
Retreatment, surgical endodontic treatment or, in some situations, extraction options may be assessed.
Treatment duration
The procedure can be completed in one or more sessions depending on the canal anatomy of the tooth and the state of infection. Afterwards there may be sensitivity for a few days.
When it may not be suitable
Root canal treatment is only carried out when it is necessary for the health of the pulp. The amount of tooth structure remaining and the risk of fracture determine the need for a protective restoration.
