TMJ and Teeth Grinding

Tooth Wear

Tooth wear is not only due to teeth clenching. Mechanical wear, acid erosion, certain habits and age-related changes can all play a part together. Distinguishing the source of the wear is important for the treatment plan.

Why is early recognition important?

At the start, only surface shine or small flattened areas may be seen. As wear progresses, dentine can become exposed, sensitivity can increase, teeth can become shorter and the bite can change. Controlling the cause in the early period may reduce the need for more extensive restoration later.

Frequently asked questions

Is tooth wear normal ageing?

A certain degree of wear can be expected with age; wear that progresses rapidly or causes sensitivity or loss of function should be assessed separately.

Do acidic drinks cause wear?

Frequent acid exposure can contribute to enamel erosion. Internal acid exposure such as reflux should also be assessed.

How are worn teeth corrected?

Depending on the amount of wear, different restorative options such as monitoring, protective measures, bonding, or an onlay/crown may be assessed.

Treatment duration

The priority is to identify the cause and to stop progression. Whether restorative treatment is needed is assessed together with the loss of tissue and function, as a result of follow-up over time.

When it may not be suitable

Before moving to restorative treatment on worn teeth, the cause (bruxism, acid exposure, reflux, brushing habits) needs to be controlled.
