The wear of teeth over time cannot be explained by bruxism alone. Teeth rubbing against each other, acidic drinks, reflux, incorrect brushing habits and different mechanical effects can be present together. The appearance and distribution of the wear give a clue about the cause. As wear progresses, the enamel thins, dentine can become exposed, and sensitivity and colour change can be seen. The priority is to identify the cause and to stop progression. Whether restorative treatment is needed is assessed together with the loss of tissue and function.
